I am dedicating this column to a discussion about “Product Portfolio Optimization (PPO), ” the topic that Dr. Chaman Jain has made the subject of this special issue of the Journal of Business Forecasting (JBF).

One of the most emotional meetings on the monthly agenda is the Product Review meeting (formally known as the SKU Rationalization meeting). With every item in the Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) industry, there is always some allegiance. Also, there is always someone who wants to “kill” the item from the orderable/manufacturing schedule.
